Leia Arwen is a black and tan miniature dachshund and she lives with Rob & Angie Blankenship. Leia celebrated her first birthday December 11, 2003. Over the past year, she has developed quite a personality! Leia passed beginners and advanced obedience classes at Dog Lovers Obedience School. We have taught Leia to "speak", "shake", and "roll over". We are currently working on some new tricks! Leia has brought lots of laughter and smiles to our lives…and we wouldn't trade any of those moments! We are sure that Leia will bring many smiles to others as we volunteer as a therapy dog!
Ruth Genter's Miss Fancy is a black and tan Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She has been sure for all of her 6 years that she is queen of the house. She loved agility class and keeps in shape by running with her brother Bebop (a tri-colored CKCS) in their fenced backyard.
Dakotah and Custer live with Jill and Marco Cucaz in Powhatan. They are both certified by TDI and Delta Society. Six year old Dakotah (on the right) loves to visit with children and play flyball. Three year old Custer loves playing with his dog brothers and sister, Willoughby and Sarah, and watching TV while lying on the couch.
Both Dakotah and Custer visited Pier 94 in New York City shortly after September 11, 2001. They made four trips to the Family Assistance Center where they comforted firefighters, police officers, and family members of victims who were lost at the World Trade Center.
This past summer Jill and Custer went for specialized training in New York City, where they earned a Certification for Animal Assisted Crisis Response. They are continuing with advanced disaster training through the American Red Cross.
This is my dog Mandy. I heard about her from a friend that saw her featured on a local TV station. The very next day I went to the SPCA to see her and fell in love. I adopted her on January 23, 1999 when she was about 14 months old. She will be 5 years old on December 1st. She is part Sheltie and part Spitz. Mandy and I enjoy visiting with the people in the nursing homes and everyone enjoys seeing her model her many costumes. She has learned many tricks including saying her prayers, waving, begging, sitting up pretty, bowing, and rolling over. She also can jump through my arms, and balance a bone on her nose. She loves to entertain and also just visit with the residents, letting them pet and love on her. Sometimes we can get them to smile and laugh. Making this difference in their lives means so much to us! Mandy and I have received both TDIA and TDIAOV titles from Therapy Dogs International.

From Catherine Jones:
In January of 1998, I went to the pound in search of a hiking partner. At that moment six puppies were being dropped off, and I fell in love with one and took her home. She sang the blues all the way home, so I named her Jazz. However, she quickly forgot about her siblings as she settled into her new life. As she grew, I discovered she had a special gift. She was extremely giving and gentle and loved to make people smile. I decided she would make a great therapy dog. She passed obedience training and temperament testing to become a member of Pat Lacey's group at 6 months of age. The patients/residents love to dress her up in boxers and put her tail through the fly. Besides dress-up, Jazz enjoys swimming, fetching, and getting belly rubs!

Peaches and Punkin live with Julia Clark. Punkin (on the right) turned 6 years old in September and Peaches will be 5 in April. They are apricot miniature poodles and came from Orangecrest Kennel in Williamsburg. Punkin loves to play fetch and give "kisses!" Peaches will walk on her hind legs and jump through hoops for any type of doggie treat! Peaches earned her CD title in October 2003. |
Zena, shown here with her first litter of pups, is owned by Julie Teller. Zena is five years old and just recently joined our group. She goes to work with her mom (who is a dog groomer) every day, and so is very well socialized. They are working on getting their CD title, and Julie plans to breed her again in August 2002. To learn more about Zena and other Dobermans, visit Zena's Website. |

This photo is of Linda, Hanne, and Fletcher Goetz, and Ben. They moved to Kentucky in April 2002. Linda and Hanne were terrific handlers, and Ben had the sweetest nature. Ben was very "athletic," playing both basketball and bowling. And we'll never forget Ben pulling Santa in his sleigh, while he wore his reindeer antlers and a blinking red nose. We miss all of you!

Dakota
April 11, 1992 - April 18, 2003
This is Barbara and Miles Toler's Dakota, one of our retired therapy dogs who moved to Texas. He was a brother of Temple and Sue's Sunny. Temple enjoyed showing Dakota and Sunny in brace at several obedience trials.
Buffett
1992 - July 2002
This is John and Debbie Blanchard's Buffett. He had been a therapy dog since 1992. He made a great team with Tequila. He was a wonderful dog and will be missed greatly.
Heather
1992 - May 2002
Heather was rescued by Ron and Betty Hall from an abusive home. With lots of love and patience, Ron and Betty trained her and she was chosen to be a therapy dog. Although she was always a little shy, she learned to love us all. She learned to play for the first time when her puppy brother, Hunter, was added to their family. Heather will be missed by all who came in contact with her.
